Complex knowledge, ready to use in the field.

For MSD Animal Health, formerly Merck, we develop several apps. Two of them are the focus here: Porcilis Pig, for pig farmers and animal health professionals, and Tickit, which lets users identify ticks from a photo.

From complex content

to an app you simply

use in the barn.

The challenge

Animal health revolves around complex, up-to-date information that professionals need precisely in places without a good connection. The question was how to turn that knowledge into apps that work reliably in a hectic working day.

In the barn there is no time to search, and usually no signal either. What is a chapter in a reference work has to be an answer in the app.

The approach

Porcilis Pig gives an overview of pig diseases and how to treat them, and is fully available offline, so users have up-to-date records even without internet.

For Tickit we used machine learning before AI became commonplace: a model recognises six common tick species from a photo. Every identification contributes to a European tick database for vets, so the app helps not only the user but also the research behind it.

The result

Two apps that combine business and social value: complex content, translated into intuitive experiences, with MSD’s mission first.

Porcilis Pig works fully offline, so a user in the barn has up-to-date records in exactly the place where there is no signal. What is a chapter in a reference work is an answer in the app.

Tickit recognises six common tick species from a photo, using machine learning that was put to work before AI became commonplace. Every identification contributes to a European tick database for vets, so the app not only helps the user but also moves the research behind it forward.

Machine learning, long before AI was everywhere.

Tickit was identifying ticks from a photo at a time when hardly anyone called it AI yet. Back then the technology was the news; now all that counts is what you can do with it.

2021

We worked with MSD Animal Health (formerly Merck) on two innovative mobile apps, each aimed at a specific audience and challenge. On the one hand the ‘Porcilis Pig’ app, which supports pig farmers and animal health professionals with information about pig diseases — fully available offline, so users always have up-to-date records even without an internet connection. On the other the ‘Tickit’ app, which lets users upload photos of ticks; the app then identifies six common tick species and so helps build a European tick database for vets — a strong combination of ease of use, science and social impact.

Together, these projects are a powerful illustration of how Apperium builds apps that create both business and social value. For pig farming and the veterinary sector alike, complex content was translated directly into intuitive user experiences — with the aim of letting professionals act reliably in their hectic daily work. MSD’s mission came first — promoting health and driving innovation — and Apperium brought mobility, technology and design together to make that ambition concrete.
