A day at the park, without the searching.

Visitors want to make the most of their day at the park. The app helps them explore it and enriches their visit, so a day at GaiaZOO is not only more enjoyable but also easier to find your way around.

We built the first version in 2016. Last autumn, together with GaiaZOO, we gave the visitor app a completely new design.

Less searching,

more discovering,

in every part of the park.

The challenge

Routes inside a zoo aren’t in Google Maps. So the park map had to sit precisely on top of the Google Maps map, so that routes inside the park were actually right.

And visitors aren’t only looking for animals. The shortest route to a place to eat, a toilet, a playground or a first-aid post shapes the day just as much, especially with children in tow.

The approach

We built an interactive park map on top of Google Maps, and the team went to the park to test the routes on the spot. Correct on paper is not the same as correct in the park.

In the recent renewal the app got a completely new design, with accessibility as the starting point. Real-time updates about the animals were added, along with digital services that connect to what the park wants its visitors to take home.

The result

Visitors find their way around the park without thinking about it. The park map lies exactly over the Google Maps map, so routes inside the gates are as reliable as those outside — tested in the park itself, not just on paper.

And it isn’t only about the animals. With children along, the shortest route to a place to eat, a toilet, a playground or a first-aid post shapes the day just as much, and those are in the app too.

With the new design, accessibility as the starting point and real-time updates about the animals, the app brings conservation and education closer to visitors, at the moment they are right in the middle of it.

More time for the animals, less for the map.

A zoo doesn’t need an app to impress. It does need one to make sure visitors spend their time there on the park, not on the map.

An app designed for exploring.

In 2016 Apperium developed an app for GaiaZOO that improves the park experience and makes visits easier. Visitors can find their way around the zoo with the shortest routes to animals, places to eat, first-aid posts, toilets and playgrounds. Last autumn we helped GaiaZOO reshape its visitor app with accessibility-first navigation, real-time updates about the animals and tailor-made digital services that reflect the park’s mission of conservation and education.

For GaiaZOO we built an app that helps visitors explore the park and enriches their day there. It makes finding the shortest routes to animal enclosures, food outlets, toilets and playgrounds easy, so visitors spend more time discovering and less time searching. That makes a day at the park not only more enjoyable, but clearer and more personal too.

Working with GaiaZOO, we recently gave the app a completely new design, with accessibility as the starting point. The renewed version offers real-time updates about the animals, interactive features and personalised digital services that support GaiaZOO’s mission: bringing conservation and education closer to visitors in an inspiring, user-friendly way.
